To coincide with the publication of the second global compilation of the Happy Planet Index, nef has launched a new Happy Planet Charter. The Charter gives clear goals for individuals, organisations and nations to aim for if they are to achieve truly sustainable well-being. It sets out the belief that it is possible to have a good life without costing the Earth, identifying over-consumption in rich countries as one of the key barriers to sustainable well-being worldwide.
The Charter calls for consistent and regular measurement of both peoples well-being and environmental impact by governments and for the development of a framework of national accounts which considers the interaction between the two. It sets challenging targets for developed nations to achieve HPI scores of 89 by 2050, and for developing nations to be supported to achieve the same target by 2070.
The Charter has already won support from a range of organisations including Friends of the Earth, the World Development Movement, the Soil Association, the Gaia Foundation, the Green New Deal group, 38 degrees, the onehundredmonths campaign and the Sustainable Europe Research Institute.
