Our work on the Happy Planet Index is informed by the wider research which we carry out on well-being, climate change and related issues.
Other work by nef that is particularly relevant includes:
- Our programme of work on National Accounts of Well-being, which calls for the systematic measurement of the different components of experienced population well-being. Use the interactive website to explore the well-being indicators we produced for 22 European countries, to compare aspects of their well-being.
- The Five Ways to Well-being, a set of evidence-based actions for individuals to build into their everyday lives and enhance their well-being.
- The Working Group on Climate Change and Development which nef co-chairs with the International Institute for Environment and Development. The Working Group (also known as the Up in Smoke Coalition) is an alliance of leading UK international development and environmental NGOs. The coalition came together to raise awareness of the interactions between climate change and international development within their own organisations and beyond.
- The book Do Good Lives Have to Cost the Earth? We tend to see climate change as an overwhelmingly daunting threat requiring impossible sacrifices. But it’s time to rethink say a range of notable experts brought together by nef and the Open University who share a conviction that living well need not cost the earth. Available from all good local bookshops.
Further details of nef's work are available on our website.
The centre for well-being at nef leads our work on well-being and quality of life. The centre aims to enhance individual and collective well-being in ways that are environmentally sustainable and socially just. Our goal is to promote the concept of well-being as a legitimate and useful aim of policy and to provide individuals, communities and organisations with the understanding and tools to redefine wealth in terms of well-being. We believe it is possible to lead long and happy lives without costing the earth.
